RECRUITING PRINCIPLES

Sound coaching and recruiting principles are transferable from one sport to another. They have to be tailored specific to the sport and the athlete by someone who thoroughly understands the ingredients for championship performance in the particular sport. There is no substitute for sound fundamentals and the latest science in his recruiting methodology.

A COACH TO MODEL

John R. Wooden, the great coach, now retired, said in his book, They Call Me Coach, and I quote -- "No matter how you total success, it all comes down to a single factor -- talent. Many great coaches, none of whom are well-known, will never receive the acclaim they deserve simply because they have not been blessed with the talent. Although not every coach can win consistently with talent, no coach can win without it."

We, like John Wooden, think that it's much more important for a good coach to have a talented athlete without experience than an experienced athlete without talent.

Coach Wooden was very modest. He was blessed consistently with enormous talent and winning teams at UCLA and is a great coach worth studying. He was a stickler for detail in evaluating talent and sound teaching principles. Once you have selected the talent, he would tell you the coaching and training -- the execution -- becomes all-important. That means selecting the best training program, evaluating and selecting the best training assistants to implement the program, making sure they thoroughly understand the sport, the principles upon which the training is based, how to measure progress, the psychology of training, and have a gift for teaching.
